Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), also known as mountain salamander, is a species of tailed amphibian from the salamander family.
The alpine newt has a body length of up to 16 cm and coloration varies depending on the subspecies and the age of the individual. Depending on the subspecies, it can be brown, grey-brown or dark brown on the back with dark spots. The belly is usually lighter, ranging from white to light gray or greyish brown. Younger individuals have bright yellow spots on the sides of the body, which fade with age.
