Quito is the capital of Ecuador, located in the Andes at an altitude of over 2,800 meters above sea level. The city was founded by the Kichwa Indians over 1,000 years before the arrival of the Spaniards. In the city center is the historic colonial district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has retained its original street layout and colonial-era architecture.
