The zebra is an animal beginning with the letter Z. This is the general name used for equine mammals which are characterized by the presence of white stripes on their black coat. These animals belong to the genus of horses. Zebras include three species, which are then divided into a number of subsequent subspecies. Due to their characteristic appearance, they are considered to be one of the most recognizable animals in the world. Zebras live in herds in the savannah in Africa, south of the Sahara.
For a long time, zebras were thought to have white fur with black stripes. A number of embryological studies have shown, however, that the background color of the animal is black, while the white stripes and bellies are just additions caused by various factors.
